The Phoenician
Scottsdale, Arizona
** Selected by FamilyTravel.com as one of the “Great Family Resorts in Arizona” (March, 2002)
The Phoenician is one of the largest and grandest resorts in Arizona. Conveniently located just nine miles from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, this 654 room resort offers elegant accommodations for business travelers and for families.
Our children were instantly attracted to the Phoenician’s childrens program, aptly named the “Funician Kids Club.” We had planned to take the kids on a tour of Phoenix for the day, but after they saw the special Kids Club room and heard about all the fun activities planned for the day, we couldn’t drag them from the resort. Their day at the Funician Kids Club began with feeding the ducks and koi fish that live at in resort’s Necklace Lagoon. Then they took a walk around the property, enjoying the cactus garden, the croquet lawn, the lawn bowling area, and the resort’s bridges, waterfalls, and fountains. After their walk they played in the Funician Club House, a special building designed just for kids. My five-year-old immediately ran to the huge stuffed animals, my eleven-year-old son begged to play on the computer, and my eight-year-old daughter decorated cowboy hats with the camp counselor.
When the kids got hungry their counselors ordered pizza and chicken strips for them so they could eat lunch while relaxing in front of a Disney video. My husband and I came to check in on the kids, thinking that they might be ready to come back with us, but they were having too much fun and were looking forward to going swimming. It’s no wonder they were excited about going swimming—the Phoenician has nine swimming pools! The kids played in the pools for hours, alternating between the water slide, the hot tub, and water basketball. When the kids were worn out the counselor took them to the resort’s ice cream parlor to spoil them with some homemade ice cream. What a day they had! When we picked them up at the end of the day they were relaxed and tired out from all their activities. It was a perfect way to end our vacation.
While the kids were at the Kids Club, my husband and I decided to relax and unwind. My husband took a nap in our beautiful room and I headed off to the Phoenician’s spa, the “Center for Well-Being,” for an aromatherapy massage. I had heard of the Center for Well-Being before. It has an excellent reputation as one of the top spas in the country. I particularly like the spa’s emphasis on stress management and balanced living skills, which show visitors how they can continue to feel relaxed and happy even when they are not on vacation. I met a young woman at the spa who comes to the Center each year for her birthday, just to relax and mediate about what she wants for her life in the coming year. What a wonderful idea.
The Center for Well-Being is a world-class spa and wellness facility. There are private consultation rooms, a peaceful Meditation Atrium, a work-out studio, sauna and steam room facilities, and a full-service salon. They even have a special Family Yoga Class, which gives parents and children flexibility and breathing techniques designed to promote relaxation and increased concentration. Who knows, the increased circulation to the brain may even help your children remember to make up their beds and do their chores without having to be asked!
If sports are more your style, you can enjoy the Phoenician’s Golf Club and Tennis Garden. The Phoenician Golf Club features a 27-hole championship golf course, putting green, driving range, and pro shop. The Phoenician’s Tennis Garden has twelve courts, including a special Wimbledon championship grass courts.
We think the Phoenician is one of the finest resorts in Arizona. An incredible amount of attention to detail has gone into the rooms and the landscaping. Bronze sculptures and rare European paintings and antiques are artistically displayed throughout the resort, the furnishings in the guestrooms are luxurious and comfortable, and the resort’s employees deliver unsurpassed white glove service. Whether you’re traveling for business, for a family vacation, or for a relaxing get-a-way for yourself, we think you’ll agree with us that the Phoenician is something special.
