The Highlands Inn is located in beautiful Carmel, California. A favorite with honeymooners, this romantic four-star hotel overlooks one of the world's most magnificent ocean vistas. For almost a hundred years, Highlands Inn has been a hideaway for celebrities and royalty. Some of the more famous guests include: the Crown Prince of Japan, Tom Selleck, Carol Burnett, Richard Burton, Walt Disney, Clint Eastwood, President and Mrs. Gerald Ford, John F. Kennedy, Liza Minnelli, Nicholas Cage, and an impressive list that goes on an on. In addition to celebrities, couples retreat to Highlands Inn for a romantic weekend, and recently the Inn has become a popular destination for families.
Families love the suites at the Highlands Inn. Most come with a fireplace and a huge indoor spa that kids love. Our reviewer's children thought they were in heaven when they were allowed to soak in the spa and watch movies at the same time. And since all rooms include a full kitchen, you don't have to drag the kids out to restaurants for three meals a day. But for at least one meal you may want to treat yourself by dining at "Pacific's Edge," Highlands Inn award-winning gourmet restaurant.
Even though the rooms at the Highlands Inn are comfortable and luxurious and the restaurants divine, we don't think you'll spend too much time indoors. The area surrounding Highlands Inn was once described as "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world." Down the hill from the Inn is Point Lobos, one of our favorite nature reserves. Our reviewer's children loved playing on the beach and searching for crabs and starfish in the tide-pools. Big Sur is also just a short drive away and is one of the most beautiful forests in the world.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is also a favorite destination for families. Located just 20-30 minutes from the Highlands Inn, this award-winning Aquarium lets you explore the hidden wonders of Monterey Bay. Plan to stay at the Aquarium for at least three hours. And while you're in Monterey, you may want to visit Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf for fresh seafood, sightseeing and shopping.
We think the Highlands Inn is one of the Top Ten Family Resorts in California. Carmel has to be one of the most beautiful spots on earth and the Highlands Inn is one of the most beautiful hotels.
