Drakesbad is so popular, there is a two-year waiting list for reservations (unless you travel off-season). Drakesbad is the perfect place to get away from it all and regroup as a family. The Ranch is located within the Lassen Volcanic National Park (a park as beautiful as Yosemite, but a lot less crowded) and some of the rooms are lit by kerosene lamps (Drakesbad doesn't even have direct-dial telephone service!). We recommend you bring some flashlights with you to make it easier for you and the children to get from the game room back to your cabin. And bring warm clothes. Even in the Summer, evenings at Drakesbad can be cool.
Drakesbad Guest Ranch is over 110 years old and is located in one of the most scenic areas in California. Hot springs and natural warm water baths run throughout the property. Kids love hiking the area and discovering lava pinnacles, boiling mud pots, cinder cones and glacier carved canyons.
Lots of activities are available including hiking, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding, swimming in the natural hotsprings, croquet and badminton. Since there are no televisions, evenings involve campfires and quiet games in the lodge. For families traveling with children we recommend you visit the ranch during the Summer months when other children will also be present. In September and October, the ranch tends to attract a quieter crowd and is not as good a fit for young children.
Drakesbad is a full-service ranch so meals are included. The dining room is in the main lodge and the food is delicious. Accommodations are in rustic duplex cabins. This is not a place where you come to be pampered. This is a place where you come to reconnect with nature and get away from the modern world. Most cabins do not have electricity and are lighted with kerosene lamps.
