The Historic Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa
A Family Destination Resort in the heart of New Hampshire's White Mountains
by Pam Plesons
Relaxed Elegance. As I stepped onto the front veranda of the Mountain View Grand Resort it was like stepping back in time. The inviting wicker chairs, big comfortable couches, expansive mountain vistas and warm reception made me feel as if I was being welcomed into a grand home of yesteryear. The Historic Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa, nestled on 400 acres in the heart of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, has been known for its character and intimate comfort since 1865. The 145-room Colonial Revival resort recently concluded a massive $20 million dollar restoration and now offers year round activities to delight all family members.
We visited The Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa this past summer and enjoyed tennis, swimming, horseback riding, and the Tower Spa. The Tower Spa is spread throughout the resort's top floor with spacious treatment rooms providing privacy with panoramic views. The Spa offers a comprehensive menu of services including the first 252-jet Chromatub in the United States. The Japanese-style Ofuro tub in the observation tower has 365 degree panoramic views.
Summer recreation is highlighted by the Equestrian Center with guided trail rides, hay rides, and romantic carriage rides. The resort's beautifully renovated Mountain View Country Club offers a historic and challenging mountain golf course designed by renowned golf course architect Ralph Martin Barton with impeccable greens and natural terrain features. Full club facilities include a heated, Olympic-size outdoor pool and hot tub, shuffleboard, horseshoes, croquet, badminton, tennis, and volleyball. Other summer resort activities include mountain biking and hiking, plus boating and fishing on nearby Mirror Lake. From Memorial Day through Labor Day there is a wonderful full day Children's Program at the resort's Northern Lights Children's Center. Here the kids enjoyed a day of crafts, games and preparation for a Hawaiian Luau. In addition, each child tie-dyed their own sheet to take home as a souvenir. The results were beautiful!
Winter Recreation originates from the Jumpin' Jack Frost Activity Center, a full-service activity center catering to four seasons of outdoor recreation, and includes cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsled rides, ice-skating, sno-tubing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and skiing at nearby Cannon Mountain and Bretton Woods. During the winter months the Northern Lights Children's Program will put the snow to full use. Children will sno-tube on the tubing hill, put on Northern Lights Ice Capades shows at the skating rink, and enter snow presidents building contests in tribute to the Presidential Range that offers such incredible vistas to the resort. Ice castles, igloos, and winter wooded adventures are all part of the program as well as dog sled mushing clinics and cross-country ski lessons. As a final touch, the kids will decorate specially designed hats and mittens. Each participant will take home their own designs as a souvenir.
The Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa has a full calendar of events planned for the winter of 2003-2004.
