The Tyler Place Family Resort

Presents

Family Retreats for
Infants & Toddlers to Parents & Grandparents

Experience the delight and adventure of a hands-on discovery vacation with your children.
In May, early June, and September we've created three special weeks that combine all the fun of a Tyler Place family vacation with opportunities to learn more about the environment and our mile of private lakeshore, our French speaking Quebec neighbors, Vermont farm and rural life, and physical fitness.
The Tyler Place is rich in environmental and cultural resources, with a mile of private shoreline and wetlands on the sixth largest (after the Great Lakes) fresh water lake in North America and 165 acres of woods and meadows, just three miles from the Quebec border. We'd like to share some of this wealth with our guests. And one of the best ways is through our morning and evening programs for kids, fine-tuned to 8 separate age groups based on abilities and interests, and through a wide range of adult and family activities . . . always in a relaxed, informal, and friendly atmosphere.
The children's activities are divided into 8 age-staggered programs to assure that kids can learn and have fun with their peers-without needing to keep up or slow down for older or younger children. The groups meet mornings and again at supper time:

Infants to 12-month-olds

12 to 18 month-olds

18 to 30 month-olds

2 ½ and 3-year-olds

4 and 5 year-olds

6 and 7 year-olds

8 to 11 year-olds

11 to 14 year-olds

A more complete listing of activities is given in our special leaflet, May, Early June, and September Family Retreats, but here's an idea of what to expect.

Younger children (Infants to 12-month-olds and 12 to 30-month-olds) explore for minnows and tadpoles and wildflowers; feed and care for the baby animals; hunt for radishes in the Children's organic garden; discover what hides under rocks or along the nature trail; experiment with water and measuring tools, sifters, and funnels. Each group has its own facility, stocked with developmentally appropriate toys and games. Most important of all: the ratios for the younger groups range from one experienced counselor/care-giver for every two babies or three toddlers.

The two older pre-school groups (2 ½ and 3 year-olds and 4 and 5 year-olds) learn to observe and respect nature as they explore the woods and meadows and lakeshore for bird nests, feathers, pine cones, animal burrows and tracks, fish eggs, and water bugs. Stories, songs and dances are taught, as well as traffic signs. The Petting Farm is a pre-school favorite where children learn to feed and groom the baby animals. Crafts and drumming, planting seeds and nibbling lettuces in the Children's organic garden, toys and games and skills from Vermont's past and present; and the heated indoor swimming and wading pools are other activities. Both groups have their own extensive recreational facility.

Older children (6 and 7-year-olds and 8, 9, and 10-year-olds) take to the lake, woods, and meadows by canoes and kayaks, sneakers, and bikes. Here on our 165 acres they identify birds, trees, wild plants; learn to paddle a canoe without a paddle; practice orienteering skills; learn to build a fire without matches; construct and paddle their own raft. Crafts and storytelling are featured, as well as sports instruction, the Climbing Wall, the heated indoor and outdoor pools, and banana boat riding. Both groups also have extensive recreation facilities, geared to each age group.

Adults will find nearly limitless options during the Retreats. There's a nice mix of earning time with your kids and time for just the two of you to play or relax as a couple. While children's programs are in session in the mornings, adults can take to the woods and trails on foot or on bicycle; canoe nearby rivers with one of our naturalist guides; visit working sheep and dairy farms in the surrounding hills; play tennis; attend art, yoga and aerobics classes; visit nearby towns and vineyards in Quebec; or simply sit by the lake (or the heated indoor or outdoor swimming pools) and read a book.

Afternoons are reserved for families to spend together: biking, boating or visiting neighboring Quebec villages. Scheduled activities are purely optional--you may find that your youngsters are tuckered out from their morning's activities and discover that family naps are in order! Afterwards, join others for family yoga, nature hikes and scavenger hunts, games and music, orienteering, and outdoor skills. Several evenings a week we have an early-evening, after-supper family activity, a campfire ceremony, singing and games. We also offer something each late-evening--dancing, music, game nights, etc. (Baby-sitters are available.)

May, Early June & September Homeschooled Children & Teenagers at The Tyler Place Family Retreats
(for Infants, Toddlers, & Pre-schoolers, please see The Tyler Place Family Retreats)

During our three Family Retreat weeks The Tyler Place offers homeschooled families learning adventures and new skills, plus all the exuberant fun of a traditional Tyler Place family vacation.

We also give parents the time and freedom to recharge their own relationship and interests, i.e. we fix the great meals, create and provide the learning and the fun, the activities and recreational facilities, and clean up as well!

Morning and early evening age-staggered programs include a wealth of challenging (but unpressured) activities: raft construction, wildlife exploration, climbing wall, banana boating, sailing, biking, native American lore, and animal care. (For more details on these, see Family Retreats.) For parents, sports and activities are endless, as much or little as you want: mountain bike trips, yoga, the heated pools, kayaking, art classes, tennis-or simply privacy on our 165 acres of undeveloped lakeshore and woods and meadows.

Afternoons are devoted to family experiences, whether its your own family picnic canoe trip, a Long Trail hike, a trip across the Quebec border-or if you join other families, exploring the extraordinary variety of sports and recreational facilities right at The Tyler Place.

Evenings, children and teens eat earlier and head out to campfires, swimming parties, Capture the Flag, bike trips so parents can linger over candlelight dinner and one--or more-desserts.

One of the great things about The Tyler Place is that almost everything you can imagine is included in the rate, so everyone gets to do everything so no child has to ask-or any adult consider-"can I?" And since all children and teenagers arrive and depart on Saturdays within hours of each other, our high-spirited, skilled college counselors and professional leaders quickly create the easy-going, close-knit community atmosphere which has made The Tyler Place a vacation "home" to generations of children.

Also, because we provide extensive care, facilities, and activities for infants, toddlers, and pre-school children (see The Tyler Place Family Retreats), both parents and older siblings have time and freedom to develop friendships of their own. Perhaps the greatest value The Tyler Place provides for the homeschooled family is the balance between comfort and independence. Both children and parents are comfortable knowing each are nearby or sharing family experiences, yet there are opportunities and space for children and teens to develop and enjoy a sense of independence-and time for their parents to renew and enjoy their own relationship as a couple.

September Bring-a-Friend Invitation
September 1 to 8, 2001
During the first week of September families are invited to bring a friend, age 6 to 15, at no charge, provided the friend is the same age group as one of their children. (Limited to one free friend per family.)
