Montana Daylight offers nostalgic train travel on a budget

SANDPOINT, Idaho - Travelers can make a nostalgic return to the Golden Age of Rail - and do it at value prices - on the restored 1950s-era "Montana Daylight", the nation's longest multiple-day, daylight-only tour train. Passengers ride the rails during the daylight hours, then overnight at hotels along the route.

Operated by Montana Rockies Rail Tours, June to September, the "Montana Daylight" travels through the Rocky Mountains along the 478-mile route between Sandpoint, Idaho and Livingston, Mont., gateway to Yellowstone National Park. The signature rail trip is three-days, two nights, with optional extensions by motorcoach or rental vehicle into Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and Glacier National parks and other areas where tracks don't go.

"Travelers of all ages love rail travel," says Marcia Pilgeram, president and CEO, "and we're especially pleased to be able to offer it at affordable prices. We see whole families travel together and the "Montana Daylight" is increasingly popular with grandparents who want to share a bygone era with their grandchildren."

The "Montana Daylight's" value-priced Discovery service for the rail portion runs $529 per person double occupancy for adults, and $389 for children ages 4 to 12. The fare includes roomy reclining seats with abundant legroom and footrests, spacious picture windows, a deluxe onboard-prepared lunch brought to the passenger's seat, daily continental breakfast, complimentary snacks and nonalcoholic beverages, a narrator who shares the legend and lore of the countryside, overnight accommodations, and airport transfers. Travelers have access to the club car where snacks and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase. Although the train cars are all restored from the Streamliner Era of the '40s and '50s, they are pulled by modern locomotives provided by Montana Rail Link.

The moderately priced Big Sky service adds seating in two-level restored dome cars and lunch in the traditional white-linen and china dining car with complimentary wine or beer. Cost is $779 per person double occupancy for adults, and $589 for children ages 4 to 12. Optional tours range from five days and four nights to nine days and eight nights.
