Discovering Southern UTAH

By Lynn O'Rourke Hayes

When traveling between my Arizona and Montana home bases, I have the good fortune to wander through beautiful, Southern Utah.
Known as the gateway to the National Parks, Cedar City, Utah in south west Utah is a natural hub for visiting the Parks (Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks and nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument). The combination of outdoor adventure and cultural enlightenment help Utah live up to the tag line "Life Elevated".

Here’s a bonus opportunity: Attend a Shakespeare play at the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival, now celebrating 50 years of plays (both Shakespeare and non-Shakespeare) in 2011. Each year Festival City, USA (Cedar City, UT) hosts a variety of festivals and offers countless adventures.

Labor Day Kayaking

By Margaret Carson

One word: Orcas.

If you're traveling any part of the Pacific Northwest next to sounds, straits or any other killer-whale-friendly bodies, your job -- nay, your obligation -- is to find a pod of orcas post-haste and fill a memory card with pictures. Sea Kayak Adventures wants to make this happen for you and is running a three-day Labor Day weekend outing September 3-5 that includes a guided sea kayak tour with camping along the Johnstone Strait off northern Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

Johnstone Strait is THE best place in the world to observe orcas (a.k.a. killer whales) as they feed on salmon in the sheltered inside passage of British Columbia, Canada's northern Vancouver Island. We run fully guided sea kayaking four-day base camps and six-day expeditions in these legendary orca waters near Robson Bight Orca Preserve (the world's only) and Telegraph Cove. Paddling with orcas in BC is a trip of a lifetime!

The package is $995 per adult and $889 per child and includes kayaks, camping accommodations, meals, instruction and guides. It also takes visitors to one of the few places where they are guaranteed to see orcas without watching them do backflips into steel tanks with wetsuit-clad trainers on their backs. Johnstone Strait is home to the world's only Orca preserve - Robson Bight.

Reservations must be booked by August 20, 2011. Enjoy a 10% discount for youth.

Uruguay's Estancias

By Lynn O'Rourke Hayes

Historic family ranches are found throughout Uruguay, and these estancias provide a glimpse into the history and culture of a time when gauchos and grazing cattle were abundant across the rolling hills and green pastures of Uruguay. Check out this Uruguay tour which focuses on the estancias with visits in Colonia del Sacramento, Montevideo, and the coast to Cabo Polonio. There is ample time for horseback riding, hiking, bird watching, or just sitting back and enjoying the scenery. http://www.adventure-life.com/tours/uruguays-estancias-2751/
