Not long ago, I joined a small group of writers and photographers traveling through China. One morning, we unexpectedly came upon a festival in a small town south of Beijing. I was mesmerized by the bright colors, the music and the enthusiasm of the local crowd.
I took dozens of pictures, entranced by the culturally rich scene. When I paused to comment upon our good fortune, I realized I had become separated from my traveling companions. Fortunately, my very tall friend Ray Fox could be detected in the distant crowd, towering above the locals.
Easily distracted, particularly by photo opportunities, I now try to set up a meeting point with fellow travelers, much as I did when traveling near or far with my young children.
On that day, my lack of Chinese language skills, and the limited knowledge I had about our next destination, would have made it a challenge to make my way on my own.
Thank you, Ray, for being a beacon on the horizon!

Diving boards and the deep end have been replaced by
slippery slides, raging waterfalls and lazy rivers. Today’s resort pools ( like the one from Maui's Grand Wailea pictured above ) and water parks offer enough excitement to keep the kids engaged for a weekend or longer. Find out more here!

Montana’s Beartooth Mountains are known for their extraordinary beauty. A weekend visit resulted in a great hike amidst snow capped mountains, a roaring stream and a chance encounter with a mamma moose and her baby. We were able to sit atop a rock and watch as the family unit grazed below.

Mamma on the lookout. Keeping watch on her baby from the brush.
