Famous as a premier destination for underwater thrills, Palau, an archipelago of more than 586 islands, recently opened the Palau Eco Theme Park, a new brand of adventure for this Micronesian paradise. The theme park features a monorail and Palau’s only zip-line course, enabling a trip through the treetops.
Eun Song Cho, chairman of Palau Leisure Group started the zip line project because he was “attracted by the beauty of the waterfalls in Ngardmau. I was fascinated by its legend." That legend includes a magical eel that metamorphosed into a river, its head becoming the waterfall. Story-telling is also a feature of the amusement park. “Combined with the local legend, the theme park will also include the Asian legend about the mythical one-winged bird,” Cho said.
Unlike scuba-diving which requires certification, zip lining requires only a willingness to unleash a desire for an adrenaline rush, manifested as the guest is whisked along a cable, 250 feet from the ground, from one platform to another. The course is said to be one of the longest in the world.
Located in the westernmost corner of Micronesia, Palau consistently ranks as one of the world's best dive destinations. Popular among adventuresome family travelers, Palau boasts some of the most spectacular water features and beaches as well as the world famous Rock Islands and Jellyfish Lake. With 1,450 species of fish and 500 species of coral, some have called Palau the "8th Natural Wonder of the World", while others have identified Palau as "One of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World."
